West Round-up: Chasers close the gap on leaders

By James Gordon

Radcliffe and Runcorn Linnets moved within a point of leaders Atherton Collieries in the EVO-STIK League West Division.

Colls’ game at home to Newcastle Town fell foul of the weather, and their two nearest rivals plundered four goals each in response.

Ben Wharton scored a hat-trick as he moved up to third in Radcliffe’s all-time scorers list, as they won 4-0 away at Kendal Town, Scott Metcalfe scoring the other.

While Linnets won 4-1 at home to Market Drayton Town, Peter Wylie and Thomas Bailey putting them in command in the first half.

After Josh Bradburn pulled one back, it was only when Paul Shanley scored six minutes from time that they could be sure of the points, and Louis Corrigan added gloss with an injury time penalty.

Kidsgrove chucked away a 3-0 lead as they were held to a 3-3 draw at home to Droylsden.

Top scorer Anthony Malbon bagged a hat-trick by the hour mark, but they were pegged back by a Sefton Gonzales brace and then a dramatic last minute equaliser from Dominic Smith snatched a point.

Jamie Rainford continued his goalscoring form as he notched two for Ramsbottom United in a 2-1 win at Clitheroe, which consolidates their play-off spot.

With games also off at Colne and Leek Town, the only other game of the weekend saw Glossop North End and Prescot Cables battle out a goalless draw that does little to assist either side at opposite ends of the table.
