Saturday's South Division action review

11 months ago By David Watters

Six of the ten scheduled matches in the EVO-STIK League South went ahead on Saturday, although the big game at Cleethorpes Town against runaway leaders Basford United was one which fell victim to the wet weather, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Basford`s closest rivals, Frickley Athletic, suffered a frustrating 3-2 defeat at struggling Peterborough Sports.

Jordan Macleod gave the hosts an early fifth minute lead that Tyler Blake cancelled out after 38 minutes, only for Josh Moreman to restore the hosts` advantage right on half-time.

A Josh Sanders own goal pulled the Blues back on level terms after 66 minutes, only for Avelino Viera to win it for Sports 12 minutes from time.

Bedworth United failed to take advantage of Frickley`s defeat by going down 2-1 on the 3G at the Oval to Stamford AFC, who are just a point behind the Greenbacks in fourth.

The Daniels led with goals from Rob Morgan after 17 minutes and then Delroy Gordon after 56 minutes. Iyseden Christie reduced the arrears with seven minutes remaining but the hosts weren`t able to find a leveller.

Alvechurch are level on points with Stamford after inflicting a sixth successive defeat on Corby Town at Lye Meadow, a 67th minute Ashley Carter goal proving enough for the home side.

Staffordshire rivals Kidsgrove Athletic and Leek Town had to settle for a point at the Novus Stadium.

The opening goal came in the 13th minute for the home side when Lee Cropper played the ball straight across the goal to Anthony Malbon who tapped into an empty net. Leek equalised with an unstoppable free-kick from Dan Trickett-Smith in the 74th minute.

Not too far away, Newcastle Town and Market Drayton Town shared a 0-0 draw, while it finished 1-1 at the Sir Halley Stewart Fields between Spalding United and Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Tom Siddons gave the Tulips a 10th minute lead that Rory Coleman cancelled out 10 minutes before half-time.
