Saturday's Premier Division action review

6 months ago By David Watters

Saturday`s fixture list in the EVO-STIK League Premier was once again badly hit by the weather, with only four games being given the go-ahead, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

One of those was always going to be on at Coles Lane on Sutton Coldfield Town's 3G but it wasn`t good news for the bottom-markers, who fell to a 2-0 defeat to fourth-placed Warrington Town.

The Wire moved level on points with third-placed Grantham Town and three behind second-placed Shaw Lane AFC, courtesy of goals from Tony Gray right on half-time and then Jack Higgins nine minutes from time.

Barwell moved to within a point of the play-off places in sixth after edging out Hednesford Town at Keys Park, leap-frogging their hosts in the table in doing so.

A crowd of 420 saw Jordan Graham break the deadlock right on the stroke of half-time to give the Pitmen the lead. However, just two minutes after the break, Matt Stenson equalised and six minutes later, the same player put the Canaries in front.

Mitch Piggon made it 3-1 on 64 minutes, and although Tom Thorley reduced the deficit a minute from time, the hosts weren't able to find a leveller.

No too far away there was a crucial win for Halesowen Town, who moved three points above Sutton Coldfield after beating a Rushall Olympic 2-0 at The Grove.

Lee Knight gave the Yeltz the lead immediately after half-time and Jack Kelly made sure with a second after 65 minutes.

Whitby Town are nine points now above the drop zone after earning a useful point from a 2-2 draw at Marston Road against Stafford Rangers.

In front of 413, Rob Thompson-Brown put Rangers ahead after 23 minutes and when Joe Thomas made it 2-0 just before the break, it didn`t look good for the Seasiders.

But as often occurs, two-goal interval leads can be dangerous, and it proved right again as a Lewis Mahoney penalty on the hour-mark and then Callum Patton in stoppage time salvaged a draw for Whitby.

Saturday's South Division action review Six of the ten scheduled matches in the EVO-STIK League South went ahead on Saturday, although the big game at Cleethorpes Town against runaway leaders Basford United was one which fell victim to the wet weather, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.
