Saturday's North Division action review

9 months ago By David Watters

South Shields still lead the way in the EVO-STIK League North after winning again on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Shields are top on goal difference, and have two games in hand, after recording a 2-0 win at Tadcaster Albion.

A good crowd of 657 saw Gavin Cogden put the visitors in front just past the half-hour mark. And a goal five minutes from time from Carl Finnigan confirmed the points went to the North East.

Scarborough Athletic moved into second and also won on their travels, 3-1 at the Butcher`s Arms against top six chasers Droylsden.

And Boro had to come back from being a cracking Luke Daly goal down to win in the final 15 minutes, thanks to a Michael Coulson penalty and brace from James Walshaw.

The Seadogs moved above Prescot Cables, who were surprised at Volair Park by Colne.

In front of another decent crowd of 478, goals from Lee Pugh on 48 minutes and Alex Curran 16 minutes from time, saw the Lancastrians to victory.

Hyde United are just a point behind Cables in fourth and possess five games in hand on them after winning 5-0 at Ewen Fields against bottom side Goole AFC, who are becoming separated from the rest of the division.

A crowd of 374 saw goals from Janni Lipka, Matty Beadle and Tom Pratt give the Tigers a 3-0 interval lead. Marcus Marshall and Luke Porritt added two more to make it a nap hand in the final 20 minutes.

Bamber Bridge and Trafford occupy the other two top six places and both won on Saturday.

Brig were 3-1 winners at Seel Park against mid-table Mossley AFC, taking a 14th minute lead through James Boyd and, after Mason Duffy had levelled in the 37th minute, sealing victory with a Brad Carsley brace in the 44th and 83rd minutes.

Trafford scraped a 1-0 home win over third-bottom Ossett Albion, courtesy of a stunning effort from Jack Dorney two minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game.

Clitheroe are three points back in seventh, but enjoyed a 5-2 derby win at fourth-bottom Atherton Collieries.

Colls led through Chris Lynch`s 27th minute opener, only for George West to level within three minutes. West then put the visitors in front 10 minutes after half-time and Alex Newby made it 3-1 just past the hour-mark.

Darrhyl Mason pulled one back 15 minutes from time, but a Kurt Willoughby spot-kick on 79 minutes and then a second for Newby in stoppage time, sealed the Blues` win.

At the other end of the table, second-bottom Radcliffe FC suffered a 6-0 home hammering by Glossop North End who, with games in hand, can still have a play-off challenge.

It was all-over bar the shouting by half-time as the Hillmen led through a Ben Deegan brace, Callum Chippendale and a Callum Grogan own goal. Bradley Roscoe and Jude Oyibo added two more in the second half and Chippendale missed an 81st minute penalty which was saved by Kyle Haslam.

Ramsbottom United and Skelmersdale United shared a 1-1 draw at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium with Lee Gaskell`s goal right on half-time being eventually cancelled out by Jordan Darr in the last minute.

Ossett Town`s poor form continues with a 2-0 Ingfield defeat to Colwyn Bay, for whom Jack Hindle after 31 minutes and Bradley Barnes a minute later were on target, while Brighouse Town moved up to seventeenth with a 2-1 win at Parkside against Kendal Town.

Aaron Martin after 40 minutes and Callum Robinson just past the hour-mark were the Yorkshire side`s marksmen, with a Ben Thomas reply coming in stoppage time.
