Safety first as lightning strikes

8 months ago By David Watters

Match officials were taking no chances with the safety of players on Saturday as stormy weather and lightning hit the EVO-STIK League.

Grantham Town's 3-2 home win over Workington at the Meres in Lincolnshire was one of the worst affected fixtures, lightning strikes forcing the players off the field for approximately 30 minutes either side of the break with the score at 0-0.

Elsewhere, a downpour of hailstones saw Corby Town's 1-0 reverse at home to Newcastle Town at Steel Park held up for nearly 10 minutes after officials called a halt over safety fears.

The EVO-STIK League also recorded its first weather related postponements of the the 2017-18 campaign when Ashton United's clash with Halesowen Town in the EVO-STIK League's top flight and Colne versus Bamber Bridge in EVO-STIK League North were both called off before lunchtime with waterlogged pitches.
