Cornwall Coastguard Plane Deployed as Girl on Stand Up Paddleboard Blown Out to Sea

Both the girl and her dad were unharmed.

A 13 year old girl on a stand up paddleboard was blown out to see earlier today. The teenager was blown so far out to sea that the coastguard’s plane was used in the rescue operation.

The girl had been out on a SUP at Pentewan Sands near Mevagissey when sea currents alone with strong winds took her and her dad who had gone into the water to help out of the view of the beach.

The local coastguard team was called out to the popular tourist beach in St Austell Bay and the RNLI all weather and inshore lifeboats from Fowey responded to the scene.

A spokesman for Mevagissey Coastguard said: “The 13-year-old’s father entered the water to assist, and both were taken by the wind and currents to rocks to the east of the beach, out of our view. We’d like to thank Huntress Charters who answered our call on VHF, and went to the area and kept watch on the casualties.

“The coastguard fixed wing aircraft, Rescue 21, was in the area, circled above and directed in Fowey RNLI. The lifeboat landed both casualties on the beach into our care. Luckily, they were both unharmed.”

The incident happened this morning at 11.51am (Monday April 10).

The coastguard spokesman said the incident, which ended well for both casualties, was a “timely reminder to carefully consider the conditions before entering the water”.

He added: “We would also strongly advise anyone using a paddle board to wear a lifejacket.”
