Landis+Gyr and Egg Collaborate to Turn UK HQ Into Smart Energy Centre of Excellence

A third of energy produced through solar and 10 tons of CO2 saved

One of the world’s leading smart meter manufacturers, Landis+Gyr (www.landisgyr.com) and clean energy solutions provider, Egg (www.crackingenergy.com) have announced the first significant data sets from a major collaboration in the creation of a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence for Smart Energy at the Landis+Gyr UK HQ, The Landing, in Manchester.

Landis+Gyr’s new UK HQ now generates 30% of its own energy through solar power, while saving 10,800kg of CO2 emissions through the use of solar and battery storage technology as well as reducing peak period energy usage by 37%.

With the UK’s drive to Net Zero never far from the political agenda, this collaboration illustrates the vital role smart buildings and a sustainable approach to build design can play in this journey.

The design has seen Egg install 256 solar panels on the roof of Landis+Gyr’s innovative new building, creating the potential to harness up to 100kW of solar energy. By comparison, Egg would typically design a solar panel system of 4-7 kWp kW for a residential family home. In addition, Egg installed three batteries, capable of storing up to 40kW of solar power which can be utilised in a number of different ways.

The project also saw Egg install eight 22kW Etrel EV charge points in the employee and visitor car park. These are capable of charging vehicles faster than regular 7 kW home chargers, offering great convenience for drivers who may only be at the office for a portion of the day.

Landis+Gyr uses its own Smart Energy Management (SEM) technology platform product to analyse the energy generated and how it is used across the site, allowing it to make decisions on how to power its business. It provides a powerful tool to optimise business energy use, reducing overall use and energy waste while providing tangible cost benefits.

Since the solution was completed in June 2022, it has recorded the following impressive data:

  • 70 MWh of solar power generated, covering 30% of usage
  • 11 MWh of EV charging delivered over 700 charging sessions, avoiding an estimated 6,300kg of CO2 versus a typical fossil fuel powered car
  • 10,800kg of CO2 emissions saved from use of solar and battery. Estimated annual emissions performance per m² reduced from 75kg to 25kg
  • Reduced peak period energy usage by 37% and off-peak by 19% with intelligent use of solar and battery capabilities

Rob Harper, Director of Sales & Market Development at Landis+Gyr said; “From the outset, it was of the utmost importance that our brand new HQ building should incorporate clean energy solutions and reflect our aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. Our own cutting-edge solutions were fully integrated into the design and build and we worked with a fellow northern-based provider, Egg, to add solar panels, batteries and EV charge points to make the building even more sustainable.”

Gareth Greppellini, Commercial, Marketing and Sales Director of Egg, said “This project is an excellent showcase for the business sense in factoring in integrated clean energy solutions from the outset of a new build. We were delighted to be asked to add Egg’s expertise in design and installation to Landis+Gyr’s world leading energy management solutions to create an ecosystem of energy efficiency and sustainability.”

Harper continues: “We help utility companies worldwide improve their operations, protect their assets and lower their operating costs, so we are incredibly proud that our flagship UK site can be seen as a case study in how such actions can produce immediate impact. With the pressure of rising energy costs already for both businesses and consumers, we hope we can encourage more businesses to prioritise clean energy solutions such as those provided by Landis+Gyr and Egg.”

For more than 125 years, Landis+Gyr has been an industry leader in energy management solutions using advanced metering infrastructure and other cutting-edge smart grid technologies, to help utility companies all over the globe improve their operations, protect their assets, lower their operating costs and provide better customer service.

Egg provides sustainable energy solutions for both business and domestic customers. Founded as The Phoenix Works in Leeds in 2010, the company has been designing and installing solar panels, storage and electric vehicle charge points for over 12 years.

A partnership agreement between Landis+Gyr and Egg will see the two companies continue to collaborate on future projects, with The Landing providing a working case study of the tangible benefits of integrated solutions. In addition, the partnership positions Egg as the sole UK provider and installer of Etrel commercial-scale EV chargers.
