West Ham vs Gent Stats & Facts

David Moyes’ position as manager of West Ham United has, on multiple occasions, appeared to be in jeopardy as a direct result of the club’s consistent flirtation with falling deeper into the Premier League relegation zone. This has put Moyes’ job security in question.

However, despite recent heavy losses to Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United, West Ham have still collected 10 points from six matches, which is more than enough to keep the Scot in the dugout at the London Stadium. This is despite the fact that West Ham have recently suffered heavy defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United.

Despite the fact that West Ham are only three points clear of the relegation zone, the club’s 1-0 victory away at Fulham on Saturday has rocketed them into 14th place, providing them with some much-needed breathing room.

Due to the fact that West Ham United have never lost a match in any of the European competitions in which they have participated, the fans of the club have every right to hope that they will take home a trophy from one of those competitions.

West Ham was given a favourable draw in the round of 16, as demonstrated by their 6-0 demolition of AEK Larnaca; however, Moyes and his players are aware that they will be facing the most difficult test of their campaign so far in the form of Gent.

The Belgian side are not among the strongest teams still competing in the tournament, but their victory over Istanbul Basaksehir in the aggregate match was enough to get the attention of the other teams in the running for the title.

Gift Orban made history when he scored the quickest-ever hat-trick in European competitions. He netted three times in just 205 seconds, before teammate Hugo Cuypers remarkably scored a fourth goal in the space of six minutes to put the tie beyond their Turkish opponents’ reach. Orban’s hat-trick set a new record for the fastest hat-trick in European competitions.

The team captained by Hein Vanhaezebrouck has also been making strides in recent weeks to improve their position on the domestic front. They have moved up to fourth place in the table after collecting 13 points from their last five matches.

Gent is no stranger to shocking London clubs in European competition, as evidenced by their famous victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the round of 32 of the 2016–17 Europa League with a scoreline of 3-2 on aggregate.

It’s important to note that Gent has had much easier opponents than West Ham, however, both teams are still in relatively good form respective to their league.

League Standings

West Ham: Currently 14th in the premier league

Gent: Currently 4th in the Belgian Pro League

West Ham has had a bad campaign this year, don’t let this fool you into thinking they’ll be harmless in this encounter though as the Premier League is probably the toughest league of them all. Even mid-table teams can do some serious damage when it comes to European football.

BTTS Market

It is difficult to predict the outcome of this match due to the inconsistency of West Ham United and the desire of Gent to pull off an upset against opposition from the Premier League.

In spite of this, considering that West Ham has a very good record in this competition, we have no choice but to put our money on the Hammers to take the lead into the English leg of the competition.

BTTS Verdict: Yes

Over/Under Market

Gent has seen over 2.5 goals in 4/5 of their last matches. Combine this with their ability to shock london clubs and their recent 5-2 win on aggregate against  Istanbul side Istanbul Basaksehir. I would bet that this match will end with over 2.5 goals

Over/Under Verdict: Over 2.5
