London Lions to Donate All Ticket Sales From BBL Game to Food Distribution Charity, City Harvest London

This marks the third charity game of this kind – so far enough has been raised to provide 28,000 meals

City Harvest launches EQUALS campaign at the Lions’ game – showing the immediate social impact of volunteering

The London Lions have announced a continuation of their partnership with food redistribution charity, City Harvest London. The Lions will donate all ticket sales from their BBL game against Newcastle Eagles on March 23 to help feed families facing food poverty in London. This is the third charity game, to date having raised over £7,000 from ticket donations.  The partnership has so far helped provide over 28,000 meals for children and families in need across the capital.

City Harvest will launch its new social impact EQUALS campaign at the Lions game –engaging people to donate food, money and their time volunteering with the charity. City Harvest’s multiplier-effect turns all donations into life-changing food support. One hour volunteering with City Harvest EQUALS 520 meals delivered for people in need. £1 EQUALS four meals.

Lions players Shanice Beckford-Norton and Bradley Kaboza travelled in the City Harvest EQUALS van on Monday to Beckton Globe Youth Group to play basketball with the children and hand out team shirts. The Lions aim to inspire future generations to take up the sport and have recently renovated a community basketball court in Tower Hamlets – London’s worst-hit borough in terms of child poverty. The ongoing partnership with City Harvest marks the ongoing commitment from the team to make an impact not only on the court, but also in the community.

It is estimated by the London Assembly that over 600,000 of London’s children live in poverty as the city’s high housing, transport and childcare costs make it harder for low income families to survive. City Harvest rescues nutritious surplus food from manufacturers, suppliers, producers and retailers, and delivers, for free, to 375+ London charities feeding those facing food poverty. The organisation aids nutrition and sustainability by providing life-changing support to communities in every London borough through food donations and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from waste.

The charity game will be played on March 23 at the Copper Box Arena with tickets being moderately priced at £1, £5 or £10. Fans can choose which option they would like to purchase, being made aware that all proceeds will go to City Harvest. The Lions sit first in the BBL (British Basketball League) with a record of 25 wins and only three losses, whilst their opposition, the Newcastle Eagles, are currently in ninth place.

London Lions player Shanice Beckford-Norton comments on the partnership with City Harvest:

“City Harvest is doing amazing work providing food for those who are less fortunate. It was great teaming up with them and Kingsford Community School connecting through our equal love for basketball.”

Sarah Calcutt, CEO of City Harvest London said:

“EQUALS is a great way for people to see what a massive positive impact they can have with even just an hour of their spare time. We deliver food to schools, community groups and food banks feeding children, youth and families who cannot afford to eat after paying their monthly bills. Young people deserve to thrive not survive. Having healthy food feeds, the mind, body, and soul. Sports is a great way to stay healthy and have fun with friends. We are grateful to the Lions for helping promote this important message and the fans for their support.”
