Saturday's South Division action review

4 months ago By David Watters

Although Basford United were assured promotion some time back, they still can`t quite celebrate winning the title as second-placed Alvechurch still have an outside chance of pipping them, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Alvechurch hung onto United's shirt tails following Saturday`s results which saw the leaders held to a 2-2 draw at Westfield Lane by a now third-placed Frickley Athletic and their 1-0 Lye Meadow victory over Stocksbridge Park Steels, courtesy of Nathaniel Waite`s 38th minute effort.

Jacob Hazel gave Frickley a 41st minute lead that Liam Hearn cancelled out after 68 minutes. Hearn then put the Nottinghamshire side in front eight minutes later, but the Blues` top scorer Hazel popped up with a stoppage time equaliser.

Frickley moved above Bedworth United on goal difference after the Greenbacks were beaten 3-2 at the Oval by in-form Spalding United, who smashed Gresley FC 8-1 away in midweek.

The Tulips trailed to a 24th minute Kyle Minto goal but led at the break through two goals in six minutes from Ben Davison and a Danny Brooks penalty. Jonathan Lockie added a third for the visitors after 63 minutes, with Alex Troke`s last-gasp penalty making it a nervy last few seconds.

Stamford AFC and Chasetown occupy the other two play-off spots with Leek Town and Lincoln United still in with a shout, albeit in the former`s case a slim one as they have only three games remaining and trail the sixth-placed Scholars by six points.

And Chasetown are in decent form as their 5-1 hammering of Belper Town showed with Jacob Lovatt netting a hat-trick after Nick Wellecomme`s sixth minute opener – Dan Cocks finishing it off with a fifth on the hour-mark – Lee Williamson replying for the Nailers.

Stamford had to make do with a point from a 1-1 Zeeco Stadium draw with Loughborough Dynamo and are in the biggest danger of being caught as they have just three games left.

Kark Demidh gave the visitors an 11th minute lead that Bradley Wells levelled 10 minutes after half-time.

Leek`s hopes were given a massive blow when they lost 1-0 at Harrison Park to third-bottom Gresley – just two days after being on the wrong end of that hammering by Spalding!

Oliver Bassett`s goal after 26 minutes gives the Moatmen a four-point lead over Romulus, who returned to the bottom of the table after they lost at Lincoln United and Market Drayton Town won at home to Cleethorpes Town.

The Roms look doomed as they have just two games remaining after Sean Wright and Phil Watt overturned Nathan Jackson`s 20th minute opener for them at Ashby Avenue.

Charlie Knowles was Drayton`s hero, bagging a brace with David Howarth adding the other as they out-gunned Brody Robertson and Curtis Bateman`s efforts for Clee who must be ruing having twelve points deducted and still facing a remarkable eight games in twelve days!

Elsewhere, Corby Town`s top six hopes have gone but they won 4-2 at Newcastle Town, thanks to a Steve Leslie brace, including a spot-kick, after Jordon Crawford and Zac Allen had scored to overturn Luke Askey and Will Bailey efforts.

Peterborough Sports are finishing the season strongly and recorded a 3-1 home win over Sheffield FC with Josh Moreman, Mark Jones and Lewis Hilliard on target, Waide Fairhurst replying from the spot.

And Tim Sanders for Kidsgrove Athletic and Tyler Blake for Carlton Town both scored twice as the sides shared six goals at The Novus Stadium.
