Brits Find Stress Relief in the Big Screen – Friends Takes the Top Spot as the Ultimate ‘Pick-Me-Up’ Show

When it comes to seeking solace from stress, Brits turn to TV shows like Friends, The Great British Bake Off, and Strictly Come Dancing.

In a poll of 2,000 adults, Killing Eve, Sex and the City, and Love Island also emerged as among the top 20 feel-good programmes that help people unwind.

The Simpsons, Breaking Bad, and Married at First Sight also made the list of comforting shows.

More than half (54 percent) of respondents revealed that they turn to television when tensions run high, with work, relationships, and financial worries being the most common triggers.

Nearly half (48 percent) instantly feel better when their favourite show is on, with an average of just 18 minutes needed to regain a sense of calm and composure.

Furthermore, 36 percent of participants resort to TV marathons to alleviate pressure when it becomes overwhelming.

Mirjam Laux from Roku, which commissioned the survey, stated, “With Christmas just around the corner, our research has revealed the perfect TV viewing formula to ward off festive stress. From concerns about finding the perfect gift to the stress of cooking Christmas dinner and pleasing your in-laws, it’s easy to forget that the festive season should be a time to unwind, feel good, and catch up on all your favourite shows.”

The Sofa: The Best Starting Point for a Series The research also revealed that comedies (42 percent), dramas (24 percent), and documentaries (23 percent) are the most popular genres to watch when feeling stressed.

As many as 71 percent of respondents believe that TV shows provide a sense of escapism, with 49 percent stating that they help them forget about the outside world.

Nearly three in 10 (28 percent) are always on the lookout for new series, and 39 percent prefer to limit themselves to one or two episodes at a time to savor the experience.

However, it seems that multitasking is common, as 43 percent admitted to having multiple series in progress simultaneously, according to the OnePoll study.

When it comes to finding a new box set to enjoy, it takes 56 percent longer to search for one than to watch it.

While 65 percent prefer to start a series from the comfort of their sofa, 31 percent opt for their bed, and one-fifth enjoy watching while exercising.

The ideal time for unwinding in front of the TV was found to be between 8pm and 9pm (13 percent), with snacks (25 percent) and a blanket (37 percent) being absolute must-haves.

Mirjam Laux concluded, “We want to ensure viewers have access to the most popular live TV and streaming channels, offering something for everyone, and getting the entire family into the Christmas spirit this year.”
